In the meantime the OP's question remains unanswered: Why would he be unable to see his Win2000 partition when booting into XP? between the two editions, as it pertains to the file system, is that on WinXP Home, one cannot disable Simplified File Sharing to readily apply NTFS's file and folder permissions.

If you install XP when the 98 partition is active, the system files will be installed on that partition and XP windows folder will be installed on the XP partition. Then if you remove, move, or reformat the 9x partition, XP will no longer boot. This is why the boot/partition manager can help in installing XP.

I have a couple of questions, about XP
If you are going to be installing XP to this drive, it won't fit. While the Windows folder itself will only be 400MB or so, the other files and folders that will be put in place will need more than 1 GB of space. As the system matures, the amount of space needed for the XP partition will increase.

I use smbmnt/smbmount/smbclient. smbclient creates an ftp-like access to your XP machine. smbmnt/smbmount allow you to mount the XP partition so that it appears just like any other partition on your linux machine.

The main thing I want to avoid is XP trying to mess with the linux stuff. Use a partitioning utility to shrink the XP partition, to make space for Linux. You may also want to create a FAT32 partition, and move the "My Documents" folder, so that your files will be available from both sides.
